Wooden Paddle Boat Kit

This educational construction kit uses lightweight wooden structural components supported by foam flotation pieces to demonstrate basic mechanical propulsion and flotation. A rear paddle mechanism uses a wound string or elastic return system to store mechanical energy; when released, that energy rotates the paddle axle and paddle, which pushes water backward so the resulting reaction force moves the assembled boat forward. The system provides a hands-on demonstration of how several simple components function together to convert stored energy into rotational motion and forward movement.

Product Specifications

Part Number CPBOAKIT
Boat Structure Lightweight wooden boat body and structural pieces
Propulsion Mechanism Wound string or elastic-powered return mechanism
Paddle Mechanism Paddle wheel with paddle axle
Flotation Supports Foam flotation pieces
Adhesive Double-sided adhesive tape
Included Components Wooden boat body and structural pieces, paddle wheel, paddle axle, foam flotation supports, string or elastic-powered return mechanism, double-sided adhesive tape, and assembly components

Applications and Benefits:

  • Build a simple working paddle boat by identifying and organizing the wooden structure, paddle, axle, flotation pieces, propulsion mechanism, adhesive materials, and assembly components.
  • Construct the wooden frame and attach the foam flotation supports to study flotation and buoyancy.
  • Install the axle and paddle mechanism so the paddle rotates freely.
  • Wind the string or elastic-powered mechanism before placing the boat in water to store mechanical energy.
  • Observe stored mechanical energy turning the paddle axle when the propulsion mechanism is released.
  • Observe rotational motion as the paddle rotates against the water.
  • Demonstrate paddle propulsion as the rotating paddle pushes water backward and the reaction force moves the boat forward.
  • Observe how foam supports provide sufficient buoyancy to keep the boat floating during operation.
  • Identify the functions of the paddle, axle, flotation supports, and boat structure.
  • Examine how several simple components work together as a mechanical system.
  • Introduce the concepts of buoyancy, flotation, mechanical energy, stored energy, rotational motion, paddle propulsion, action and reaction, and simple mechanical systems.
  • Test the completed boat by placing it on water and releasing the mechanism to produce forward motion.
  • Paint or decorate the wooden parts after assembly if desired.

Caution:

Allow all paint to dry completely before placing the boat in water.
